Here, we would like to share some tips on pike fishing, so that your catch would be 100% guaranteed.
The first touches of frost come about in late October or early November. This is when water starts cooling down rapidly, making algae go still and descend to the bottom. This opens new areas for catching this predatory fish. Most experienced fishers wait for this period, as it allows them to try out some areas where they could not fish in summer due to abundant aquatic vegetation.
But even at this time, not everyone is going to have a great catch. There are several reasons for that.
Tip No. 1: Fishing area
The sharp-toothed predator is not quite fond of extreme temperature changes. As it gets colder, all biological process in the fish's body slow down, and it becomes much less active. A pike is least active when it is cold. Its main objective is now to spend as little strength and energy, even when hunting. That is why it just floats still, waiting for a careless hatchling to swim by. Needless to say, the hatchling must be large enough, so that the attack effort would be worth it.
In autumn, temperature drops quickly in shallow rivers and lakes, and pike slows its activity down to a considerable extent. Thus, it is best to hunt this predator in shallow or shore areas.
Note that the best time for pike fishing in autumn is the second half of the day!
Tip No. 2: Weather
Pike's activity is also affected considerably by weather, specifically, the sun and atmospheric pressure. One must keep in mind that pike is most active in rainy or cloudy weather. The reason is that water becomes very clear in autumn, which is not comfortable for the predator. So, on a sunny day, it is unwilling to hunt, lurking instead in darker places. That is why a sunny day is not quite the best time for pike fishing. Such weather is also accompanied by increased atmospheric pressure, which has a negative effect on the pike's activity. When the weather is dull, on the contrary, atmospheric pressure becomes lower and steadier, and the predator becomes much more active.
Pike nibble is also affected essentially by wind. On windless days, it tends to be very careful, hiding at a comfy place. It is important to know that east or north wind is not that great for catching predatory fish. The best wind for pike fishing is south or southwest wind not exceeding the velocity of 7 m/s.
Many find it enjoyable to go fishing when the weather is comfortably sunny, and this is the main mistake.
Your own comfort and the comfort of the fish are radically different. That is, in autumn, you should wait for less comfortable weather to set in over the river to go pike fishing.
Tip No. 3: Moon phase
Note that moon phase is yet another major factor for nibble. Pike is most active during the first and last phase.
Tip No. 4: Bait
Choosing the right bait is extremely important. It is very difficult to determine the exact bait to lure the predator, as a number of factors comes into play here: time of the day, conditions at the water body, as well as the small fish that the predator usually preys upon here. Thus, when you go fishing, it is wise to take a diverse set of various baits with you. Some would say that pike fishing with a wobbler and a spinner yields the best result, but silicon and blinkers also do their job fine. Make sure you keep the conditions at the fishing site in mind when selecting the bait. As it was mentioned above, autumn pike prefers shallow places, so your bait should be large and lightweight, as small bait would rather attract a perch.
In autumn, it is best to buy bait of 12 cm or larger to catch a pike. Its colour does not matter; the bait must flicker nicely at minimum movement speed.
Tip No. 5: Changing the fishing site
Changing your position often is a basic premise for success. If you made 10 to 15 throws and never got a single bite, this probably means that there is simply no pike here.
If you change your place frequently, the chance to catch the predator increases several times.
